This was an early allocation of weapons and, as can be seen, it was not completely representative of the firepower installed on D-Day some time later, although it is a good starting point.

The artillery units 8 and 9, allocated for the defence of the sector between the battery at Longues-sur-Mer and the battery at St Marcouf (Crisbecq), were marked on maps and period paperwork as being stationed at Maisy on D-Day. The first German artillery units at Maisy arrived in 1940 and were stationed in the village in farms and private houses. I have interviewed many people who lived in the village at the time who remember the Germans well. Mr Montagne, for example, who still lives on his family farm in the locality, recalls the Germans arriving. They occupied his father’s barns with their horses and horse-drawn artillery. They inscribed their unit number on the wall inside one of the barns and it is still visible today, the number 630 Rgt marked on the concrete post. The Germans used some local people to work at the site at Maisy in the early days, for example, excavating open pits for field guns, but nothing elaborate or particularly permanent.
